First, I'm not talking about plants in an ecosystem, but rather plants loaded one at a time from the browser.

I'm working on a scene with a few trees that all use the same materials. When I load them one at a time, some come out with leaves of one color and some load with leaves with a different overall color. The leaves move towards yellow from green.

When I check each plant in the plant editor, and check the materials from there, they are exactly the same. When I check the materials from the world browser, they are also identical, including the overall color. I verify that one at a time to make sure.

When I render however and in the Open GL preview, some trees are one color and others another color at random. Even copying the material from one and pasting to the other makes no difference.

Why is this happening? How do I stop it from happening. I've seen this in prior versions and never asked before, but in this scene it's ruining the scene. I have no idea what else to do since I've confirmed the leaf materials are identical. In fact if I group them the materials collapse together but still render different on each tree.

After posting this I had an immediate face / palm moment. I simply loaded more trees than I needed and deleted the ones that had the wrong color.

I'd still like to know why this happens however?

There is built in color variability into the plant species.
